What We Keep

New Moon in Virgo - New Moon in Libra September 10 - October 10
There was a time when almost every family had a set of good china. It lived behind a glass door or on the highest shelf of the cupboard, stacked carefully and brought down for holidays, company, and dinners important enough to risk a chip. Was it a wedding gift? Did it belong to our grandmother? Do we remember where it came from? All we know is
that it was the good china, which meant, of course, we hardly ever used it.
I wonder how many people still have a set tucked away somewhere. More interestingly, I wonder how many of us could explain what we're saving it for. That's the funny thing about rules we've lived with for a long time. Eventually the rules become facts. You don't use the good china on Tuesday. You bring something when you're invited to someone's house. You don't talk about money. You finish what you start. You don't make a fuss. You save the expensive candle, apparently for the queen.
And then one day you light the candle because it is raining and you want the house to smell good.
And....nothing dramatic happens. No one comes to confiscate the candle. The china is still in the cabinet and your life is still your life - except there is a tiny shift. A rule you hadn't realized was a rule has become a choice.
September has quite a bit of that feeling.
I Never Thought About It This Way
There is a lot of conversation moving through the sky this month, maybe not the easy kind where everyone says exactly what they mean, everyone hears it correctly, and we all go home pleased with ourselves. Mercury spends much of this cycle moving through Libra, the sign of the scales, while making contact with some of the biggest forces in the sky. It feels less like landing on the answer and more like mulling something over, hearing another side, looking underneath it, and realizing what we thought was settled isn't quite as settled as we imagined.
Not at all a bad thing. There is a peculiar pressure to remain consistent with ourselves. We said this. We chose that. We believed something so strongly that a life was built around it. Changing our minds might feel suspiciously like admitting the earlier version of us missed the mark.
I don't think this is always true The things we believed at twenty years old make perfect sense for the people we were at twenty. The things we wanted at thirty may not be what we would choose now. There are things we probably believe in today that our older selves will find hilarious. I hope she's kind about it.
Sometimes we know more. And sometimes someone else knows something we don't.
Libra understands this particularly well. It asks us to consider another perspective without immediately abandoning our own. It's harder than it sounds. Diplomacy isn't the same as agreement and listening isn't the same as surrendering. The space between insisting we are right and bending into a pretzel to keep everyone happy is where an honest conversation is waiting to happen.
The Things Underneath the Things
At the same time, Venus leaves Libra and enters Scorpio and the mood changes. Libra can make a beautiful table. Scorpio wants to know what everyone sitting around it isn't saying.
There are times when keeping things pleasant is an act of grace. There are other times when pleasantness becomes a very attractive rug under which we have swept half the living room.
Venus in Scorpio is less interested in appearances and more interested in what has weight: trust, intimacy, loyalty, desire, money, friendship, belonging - all the complicated ways we become attached to people and the lives we've built around them. It can bring us closer to what we value, although getting there may require admitting our values aren't as tidy as we'd like them to be.
This is where the good china becomes more than just dishes.
Why do we keep what we keep? Why do we protect certain things? Why do some relationships receive endless chances while other don't? Why does one person's opinion carry so much weight? Why are we still following an agreement nobody remembers making?
What happens when two people value different things?
September doesn't give us the luxury of living inside our own answers. Much of this cycle sits between me and we: the individual and the relationship, personal desire and collective needs, speaking honestly and speaking with care.
We don't have to choose one side and throw the other overboard. How do we hold both?
The Light Is Changing
We don't need an ephemeris to notice Summer is beginning to loosen its grip.
The evenings come a little earlier. The light through the window changes. Even when the afternoon is warm while morning is hinting another season is on its way.
The Virgo New Moon arrives right at this threshold. Virgo has long been associated with the harvest, that old understanding that gathering and sorting are part of preparing for what comes next. We decide what is ripe, what needs more time, what needs to be stored, and what can be left behind.
I like that image for this New Moon because it doesn't require us to reinvent ourselves. We can simply take stock.
There are however, ideas that may need revising. Uranus turning backward in Gemini adds to that feeling, as though, some of the thinking of recent months needs another pass. What did we learn? What surprised us? What sounded brilliant at first but doesn't quite hold up now? And what seemed strange initially, but has quietly started to make sense?
Not every change of mind is a crisis of identity. Sometimes we're editing.
Virgo should appreciate that.
But Does It Work on a Tuesday?
Of course having a revelation in the kitchen is one thing. Making it work in your actual life is another.
By the middle of the month, some of September's bright ideas begin meeting limits. It's lovely to decide that you're going to live differently until the new plan encounters schedules, money, commitments, other people, and the unfortunate fact that a day, continues to only have twenty-four hours.
Saturn, as usual, would like everyone to please be reasonable.
But limits aren't always there to stop us. Sometimes they help us find the shape of something. A conversation gets more serious. A new idea needs adjusting. Sometimes what we thought we wanted may need more thought, while something we almost threw away proves sturdier than expected.
This is an important part of What We Keep because questioning something doesn't mean we have to get rid of it.
Maybe you look at the tradition, the relationship, the work, the belief or even those dishes in the cabinet and realize you actually like this. You want to keep it, not because you've done it this way, not because someone expects it, and not because you've already invested twenty years in it.
Given the choice today, you would choose it again. That's a different kind of keeping.
Make Room at the Table
When the sun enters Libra at the Equinox, light and darkness briefly meet on equal ground. I love that September gives us this image right in the middle of the month asking us to hold seemingly opposite things together.
We can be diplomatic and truthful. We can care deeply about other people without abandoning ourselves. We can honor where we've come from while admitting we've changed. We can be uncertain and still move forward. We can keep something without keeping it exactly the way it was.
Balance isn't always a perfect fifty-fifty arrangement. Sometimes it is the constant little adjustment we make when real people with different needs are trying to share a life.
Then the Aries Full Moon arrives and presses a thumb onto the other side of Libra's scales. After so much consideration of relationships, agreements, perspective, and everybody else's place at the table, Aries asks us to remember that we're sitting there too.
There's something wonderfully uncomplicated about that.
What do I think? What do I want? Where do I stand?
Not because the other people don't matter. But because you do too.
Use the Good China
The last days of September don't feel like a neat conclusion so much as a deepening. Things that seemed blurry, may become clearer. Something underneath the surface might finally have a name. A different possibility may appear. Mars moving into Leo brings some heart and courage back into the room, and Mercury eventually follows Venus into Scorpio, where polite conversation becomes considerably less interesting than the truth.
By then, perhaps we've looked a few things differently.
Maybe you keep the china. Maybe you give it away. Maybe you decide it's ridiculous to own twelve plates you are afraid to eat spaghetti from and start using them on Wednesdays. The dishes aren't really the point. The choice is.
There is a difference between keeping something because you've never considered another possibility and keeping it after you've looked at the alternatives and thought, Yes. This. I still want this.
September may simply be reminding us to take a look again. Because the most surprising thing we discover when we question an old life isn't how much we want to change.
It's how much we would choose all over again.

The Ten of Pentacles
The Other Side of Inheritance
Each month before I write these letters, I pull one tarot card to hold the feeling of this cycle as a companion for the weeks ahead.
This month, The Ten of Pentacles appeared.
And after sitting with everything that is happening in the sky this month, I find this card especially interesting.
The Ten of Pentacles is traditionally associated with family, security, prosperity, inheritance, and legacy. In the familiar image, several generations occupy the same scene. There is an older man, a couple, a child, dogs, a home. Nobody is standing at the beginning of the story. They are living inside something that is already underway.
We do that too. We inherit objects, certainly, but we also inherit ideas about money, love work, family, success, security, and what a good life is supposed to look like. Some become treasured parts of who we are. Others may have made perfect sense for the people who handed them to us but don't fit quite as comfortably now.
September's Ten of Pentacles doesn't feel like an instruction to preserve everything. After a month full of questioning, negotiating, digging deeper, and finding our own place within the group, it feels more like an invitation to become discerning keepers.
What deserves another generation? What can change an still remain true to where it came from? What have we been carrying simply because it was handed to us?
And there is the other side of inheritance. At some point, without much ceremony, we stop being only the people receiving things and become people who are handing them forward. A recipe. A phrase. A kindness. A way of welcoming people. Permission to change your mind. Courage to tell the truth without being cruel.
Legacy may not be something we leave someday. We may be making it while we're busy doing everything else.

What have I accepted without questioning?
A belief, habit, expectation, or agreement that deserves another look.

You don't have to answer all of these. Start with the one that won't let you go.
Where in my life have I confused keeping the peace with being in agreement?
What have I changed my mind about in the last few years, and what did I learn by doing so?
What do I value now, that I didn't value ten years ago?
Where am I still following a rule I've never actually questioned?
What has survived my questioning and become even more important to me?
Where could I listen to another perspective without abandoning my own?
What would I chose again today?
New Moon in Virgo Ritual
Choose With Intention - Virgo New Moon - September 10
For the Virgo New Moon, find one beautiful or meaningful thing you've been saving. A candle, a bottle of perfume, stationary too lovely to write on, a dress waiting for the right occasion, a special mug, even a recipe you've been meaning to make. Bring the candle you do use and your special journal.
Light your candle and put your treasure beside you. Spend a few minutes thinking about why you've kept it and what you've been waiting for.
Then write:
This season, I choose.....
Finish the sentence without worrying about whether the answer sound profound. Virgo appreciates honesty and usefulness far more than a grand declaration.
Then choose one small action that makes your sentence real.
And before the night is over, use something beautiful you have saved.
You don't need a better occasion than being alive on a Thursday.
Full Moon in Aries Ritual
Stand Beside Your Choice - Aries Full Moon - September 26
Bring a candle and your special journal for...
At the Aries Full Moon, return to the sentence you wrote at the New Moon. Light your candle, read your words, and notice whether you still agree with yourself.
You are allowed not to.
If the choice still feels right, write one promise beginning with:
I will....
Keep it specific and small enough to live in the real world. Then take one action within the next twenty-four hours that stands beside the choice you made.
If your answer has changed since the New Moon, write a new one. That's the beautiful thing about Aries, Aries pivots. Take one action within the next twenty-four hours to stand by your new choice.
September has spent the month reminding us that changing our minds and losing ourselves are not the same thing.
Before You Go
There is a lot moving through September. Conversations change direction. Values deepen. Relationships ask for honesty. Ideas meet their limits, the light changes, and somewhere in the middle of all of it we are asked to consider other people without forgetting ourselves.
Somethings are worth questioning. Some are worth changing. Some will surprise you by becoming even more precious once you've looked at them closely.
Maybe that's enough for one lunar cycle: to know that what stays in our lives doesn't have to stay simply because it has always been there. It can stay because we chose it.
And please, use the good china.

Patty
